President Niraj Sutaria presented a gold-framed Navkar Mantra to His Holiness Pope Francis.

This year has marked significant progress in fostering meaningful relationships with the broader Jain community and external organisations. From 24th to 26th November 2024, the Mahavir Foundation had the distinct honour of being represented at the Vatican by our esteemed President, Niraj Sutaria, and Vice President, Mukesh Kapashi, as part of an international Jain delegation. This delegation was organised by the Institute of Jainology (IOJ).

Joining us were notable representatives from IOJ, including Dr. Mehool Sanghrajka, MBE, the organisation’s Managing Trustee.

The visit centred around the theme, ‘Christians and Jains: Building a Better Future’ – a topic of profound relevance in today’s turbulent world.

The journey began on the evening of Sunday, 24th November 2024, with an introductory gathering of all delegates. The following day, Monday, 25th November, marked a historic moment as the international Jain delegation was granted a private audience with His Holiness Pope Francis. His Holiness delivered an inspiring address, emphasising the importance of interfaith dialogue in creating a harmonious future for humanity and nature alike. Following his speech, Pope Francis personally greeted each delegate – a truly humbling experience that will be cherished by all who attended. This extraordinary encounter, typically reserved for world leaders, highlighted His Holiness’s deep respect for the Jain faith.

Tuesday, 26th November, saw a joint conference between representatives of the two faiths. Distinguished speakers from both sides presented their perspectives on critical themes: ‘Inclusivity and Diversity’ and ‘Caring for the Earth, the Poor, and the Most Vulnerable’. The presentations sparked meaningful and insightful discussions, revealing striking commonalities between Christian and Jain philosophies.

The conference was tinged with sadness upon learning of the passing of Cardinal Ayuso, the Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, on Monday, 25th November. As the department responsible for coordinating this visit, his passing cast a sombre shadow over the event. We extend our heartfelt prayers for his soul to rest in eternal peace.

The delegation was treated to exceptional hospitality, including comfortable accommodation, delightful meals, and a guided tour of the Vatican. Highlights included the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel, adorned with masterpieces by Michelangelo and Raphael; the crypt, which holds the tombs of Popes and significant historical figures; and the grandeur of St Peter’s Basilica.

The trip also provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen ties with leaders from other Jain organisations. Such an impactful experience was only made possible through the meticulous efforts and unwavering dedication of the entire Institute of Jainology (IOJ) team, to whom we express our deepest gratitude.
